Final Fantasy IX - Key Items
Key items are special items that have many functions; they can be used to advance the story by giving them to other characters or they can be maps, keys or just rewards.
By pressing [Square], you can read the description of the key item. Some descriptions change throughout the game.
Maps
There are two Key Items that are maps; the first one received is the Continental Map and the second is the World Map. The Continental Map shows your current location and place names and is limited to the Mist Continent. After visiting Lindblum, you can receive an Ancient Map that shows the whole of Gaia.

Plot Items
Plot items are used for certain, plot related events.

Rare Jewels

There are 4 "Rare Jewels" that, hundreds of years ago, formed a single crystal. Within this crystal, the Eidolon called Alexander was sealed by the Summoner Tribe of the Mist Continent. It was sealed after a failed experiment caused it to go on a rampage and, to prevent it from being summoned again, it was sealed in a crystal and divided into four fragments.
Rewards (No Other Purpose)
These items are received as rewards for various quests and have no other purpose but to look at.

| Gemini | Found by throwing ten gil into the fountain at the entrance of Treno thirteen consecutive times. |
| Leo | Found in Alexandria Castle's Neptune statue room, in the corner of the right wall. Enter through the west tower's side door. |
| Libra | Found next to the fountain in Madain Sari, toward the rear. |
| Ophiuchus | See Ophiuchus Quest |
| Pisces | Found in a chest at the Core area of the Invincible. |
| Sagittarius | Found in Lindblum's Business District, during its reconstruction. The player must search the corner of the dirt path on the left side of the screen. |
| Scorpio | Found in the Cave area of Quan's Dwelling, at the bottom of the screen, near where the hot spring can be accessed to restore HP and MP. |
| Taurus | Found behind the item shop in the slums of Treno. |
| Virgo | Found in the inn of the Black Mage Village, next to the chest. |
Treasure Hunter
These items are only useful to get the best score in the Treasure Hunting Quest.
