Chocobo World

Final Fantasy VIII - Chocobo World

Chocobo World is a mini-game that was originally for the PocketStation in Japan. In the mini-game you control a Chicobo called Boko and is assisted by Cactuar & Moomba.

You must first find Boko in the main Final Fantasy VIII game; this is done by completing a Chocobo Forest, afterwards Chocoboy will offer you Boko who will follow the Chocobo you ride on the world map.

From this point on, Chocobo World becomes an option on the Save Game menu, selecting this option allows you to send Boko to Chocobo World, bring him home, start over with a new Chicobo and learn how to play.

Story

Mog, a MiniMog, wants to go treasure hunting with his friends. But the treasure is in the 'Scary Mountain'.

Everybody tells Mog, "We're not going! It's too scary!" but Mog wants to go so badly. No one can stop him now!

Mog finally decided to go by himself. Then... Two days passed... Three days passed. Mog did not come home. Moomba and Cactuar imagined Mog being barbecued by the Demon King.

"We have to go help Mog with Chicobo!".

Moomba said, "I'll find weapons!"

Cactuar said, "I'll find treasures!"

What's Chicobo doing with a TV and Fishing Pole?

How to play

The mini-game is split between 2 main parts; walking and battle. The controls below will be referenced based on the PC version of Final Fantasy VIII.

On the walking screen; use the direction buttons to move Boko up, down, left, and right and Ctrl to open the menu.

On the battle screen you can use left and right buttons (alternate between left and right) to speed up the ATB timer.

While walking, open the menu to see where you are and where "Events" can be found, make your way to these events (Hold down direction arrow to go faster). Events can be one of the following:

  • Battle Event
  • Moomba Event
  • Cactuar Event
  • Koko Event
  • MiniMog Event
  • Demon King Event
  • Rest Event

Battle Event

When in battle, each combatant has their HP (Left for enemy, right for player) and a timer in the middle.

When the timer reaches 0, the combatant will attack; you can speed your timer up by alternatively tapping left and right.

Your attack power, and therefore damage, is determined by your weapon stats; if you have a weapon with the stats 2450, you will deal damage of 2, 4, 5 or 0 which is chosen at random.

After the battle is won, you will get to place a dot on the level up grid; this is random but the goal is the get 3 in a row either vertically, horizontally or diagonally to level up.

Moomba Event

Moomba will sometimes show up with a weapon; this is represented by a 4 digit number.

You can choose to keep your current weapon or change to the new one; each digit represents one of 4 random numbers you can "roll" during battle to deal damage.

Select the weapon you want with either up or down on the direction buttons.

Cactuar Event

Cactuar will appear and give you an item he has found; these are ranked as A, B, C or D.

A & B Ranked items are best and can be Chocobo World exclusive such as Mog's Amulet or Freindship which are used to summon MiniMog and Moomba, respectively, in Final Fantasy VIII.

Once he has delivered his item, he will leave.

Koko Event

At level 20, Boko finds another Chicobo named Koko. At level 50, Boko finds her again but she has fallen down a pit, if "Event Wait" option is set to ON, then you will save her from the pit, otherwise you won't and you will not encounter her again.

After this you will encounter her randomly and each time you will gain a power up to your Summon attack in Final Fantasy VIII.

These attacks are ChocoFire, ChocoFlare, ChocoMeteor & ChocoBocle.

Demon King Event

At level 100, the Demon King will kidnap Koko. You will no longer level up and your goals now are the find then defeat the demon king.

The trick to this is to set your movement to 1 and head to a dot on the map to fight the Demon King.

He has 99 HP, deals average damage but attacks fast; so be quick on the buttons.

Rest Event

While walking, you will sometimes stop and rest. This regains lost HP over a short period of time and gives you a chance to rest from button mashing.

There are a number of different rest scenes that can happen.
