Junctioning

Final Fantasy VIII - Magic Junctioning

Levelling up only gives minor increases in stats; in exchange, you can "Junction" magic to your stats to increase them.


You can also "Junction" magic to Elemental attack/defence and Status attack/defence to cause elemental damage/status conditions to physical attacks and elemental/status defence.


The amount of magic you have in stock affects the potency of the magic Junctioned.


Stat Junction

GF's can learn abilities such as HP-J and Str-J; when the GF is Junctioned to a character it unlocks the corresponding stat in the Junction screen.

Your stats can be boosted by Junctioning magic to them; this can be done manually or automatically.


Certain magics are better than others in certain categories and you can only Junction magic to a stat if you have a GF Junctioned that has learned the corresopnding stat Junction ability.

If you select Auto, you can have the game Junction your Magic automatically based on one of three criteria: Attack, Magic & Defence.

  • Attack: Priority is given to Strength.
  • Magic: Priority is given to Magic.
  • Defence: Priority is given to HP.

Ultima is the best in almost all stats with the exception of Speed and Hit which are best with Triple.


Lower level spells have smaller effects on stats and, depending on the stat, status effect magic such as Sleep has small effects on stats.


  • Aura works well for Strength.
  • Meltdown works well for Vitality
  • Pain works well for Magic.
  • Reflect works well for Spirit.
  • Haste works well for Speed.
  • Stop works pretty well for Evasion.
  • Blind is decent for Hit.
  • Death works pretty well for Luck.


The table to the right has the modifiers related to the spell and can be sorted by category. Click the header of the table for any category to sort the list into best/worst.

Elemental Junction

GF's can also learn Elem-Atk-J and Elem-Def-J which allows you to Junction elemental magic to your weapon and defence.


Junctioning elemental magic to your weapon adds that element to your physical attacks; adding this can be beneficial against enemies that are weak to an element but strong against magic.


Junctioning elemental magic to defence can reduce, negate or even absorb this element when you are attacked by it.


In the defence screen, the 8 elements are represented by a number percentage which is linked to the amount of magic in stock. If a green star is shown next to an element, you will absorb the attack and it will heal you.


Some magic can add defence against multiple elements at once.

Status Junction

GF's can also learn ST-Atk-J and ST-Def-J which allows you to Junction status magic to your weapon and defence.


Junctioning status magic to your weapon adds that status effect to your physical attacks; adding this can be beneficial against enemies that are vulnerable to status effects.


Junctioning status magic to defence can reduce or negate a status effect when you are attacked by it.


In the defence screen, the 12 status effects are listed with a number percentage which is linked to the amount of magic stocked. Some magic can add defence to multiple status effects.
